30+ Years in the Automotive Industry
The story goes back to the early 1980s when young Vivek wanted to get into the automotive business. Back then, Ambassadors and Fiat 1100s were ruling the roads. When Vivek asked for financial help, one of his brothers told him to buy some tools and sit on the road in front of KMV college (Jalandhar) to earn money for his car workshop.
But despite all obstacles, with no family support, Vivek worked hard and managed to pursue his dreams. He also sold taps & faucets to fund the startup during its initial days. He embodies a perfect combination of grit & determination.
The business now has come a long way from those modest beginnings. The company now owns several large car workshops and has decades of relationship with India’s largest car maker. The name VM became synonymous with the high quality car services and bagged numerous awards.
In 1991, Avinay was born in Amritsar. That was the time of violence and insurgency in Punjab and the family moved to the peaceful state of Himachal Pradesh. Avinay closely observed his father’s car repair business since childhood and discovered that the advancement in the automotive sector isn't up to the mark. People used to get stuck at remote locations due to vehicle breakdowns. Most of the workshops exploit the unaware car owners and charge unreasonably high prices, sometimes for the services which are not even related to the actual problem.
Avinay set out to find a way. He dreamed of a platform that’d bring transparency and fairness in the auto industry. A place where car owners can get quality car services without getting cheated. But it was too early. There was no concept of a smartphone and the internet was erratic and expensive.
In college, Avinay used to spend most of the time reading about entrepreneurs, start-ups and businesses. He used to attend business-related seminars across the country. He also won several business modelling and entrepreneurial competitions. He started laying the groundwork.
In March 2014, he started brainstorming for a perfect name. One day while returning from college, he coined the word ‘CarEager’. The name beautifully sums up what the company was going to do. ‘CarEager’ signifies the business DNA, his passion for cars and can easily be pronounced or understood by people across the world. It also has a meaning in Hindi. So without wasting any time, he purchased the domains and applied for trademark registrations.
He hired interns to capture data of car sales and service businesses across India. The idea was to bring the businesses online via the CarEager App and can easily be contacted in need. The data of 10,000+ Indian car businesses with GPS locations was successfully gathered. During this time, he completed his graduation with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manipal University and met his co-founders - Sandeep, Chandan, Pranav & RIshabh. And the development of the CarEager started.
CarEager started as a company that was interested in building an only the Automotive Ecosystem. But during the development, the family realized that the problems could be addressed only if they set up their own network of car workshops. That would ensure control over price and quality, which is not truly possible in the franchise and aggregation models.
n mid-2016, after completing Post Graduation in Project Management from New Zealand’s Unitec Institute of Technology, Avinay joined a Gurugram-based startup to gain some hands-on management experience.
Feb 23, 2017 was a significant day in the history of CarEager. Avinay was on a Rajasthan road trip along with friends. On Bikaner-Jaisalmer highway, the car broke down. They called on Skoda Helpline Number just to realize that there was no workshop nearby. The only option was to transport the car on a trailer to a Skoda dealer in Jodhpur. It meant nothing but a spoiled trip. But he knew that the problem wasn’t that big. They pushed the car to a truck repair shop to get the basic tools, which was a couple of km away. After a couple of hours of inspection, he found the issue and rectified the car. They were able to continue the trip.
After the trip, Avinay realized the importance of the platform he’d been dreaming about for years and immediately resigned after coming back to Gurugram. He informed his family about his plan for CarEager. The father quickly realized the opportunity.
To again identify & validate the problems, the father-son visited 60-70 car dealers & workshops across Delhi NCR as customers. Almost all workshops tried to exploit by making them worry about imaginary problems. The used-car dealers couldn't fulfil the basic requirements of a buyer – warranty, certification & service package.
Finally, the construction of CarEager Headquarters & workshop started in Gurugram. His other co-founders left their respective jobs to join CarEager full-time.
In early 2019, “CarEager launched India’s most advanced car workshop in Gurugram” which is the foundation of the strategy. Within a few months, “CarEager is among the top rated premium car service providers on Play Store & Maps in India.”
Even on a very thin marketing budget, the business had a good start. CarEager served 1000+ Customers and CarEager Android & iOS Apps got 15000+ Downloads. 2019 marked the beginning of an era of CarEager.
